Jerash, Jordan. The ruins of the ancient city Decapolis are the best preserved Roman ruins in the region, which was inhabited in the Bronze Age already. The hippodrome, temples, arches, theaters and other architectural will take you back in time. It is the second most popular site after the desert jewel – Petra.

The Greek ancient city Gerasa was established by Alexander the Great. Later the Romans conquered the area in 63 BC and built a new city on Gerasa’s foundation. The city expanded and started to prosper. However, after the Persian invasion in the 7th century and a devastating earthquake in the 8th century, Jerash started to lose its power.

Today the modern Jerash has evolved next to the ancient one. The city again prospers from tourism. The tours are supplemented with the performances of the Roman Army and Chariot Experience, that take place at the hippodrome twice daily. Three week summer festival includes theater, dance and music performances. Jerash Festival is even visited by the royal family of Jordan.
